Asian Palm Civet

Predators: Humans are predators of Asian Palm Civets.

Main Characteristics: Asian Palm Civets have a body length between 48 and 59 cms (19 - 23 inches), a tail length between 44 and 53.5 cms (17 - 21 inches) and they weigh between 2.4 and 4 kgs (5.3 - 8.8 lbs).

They have a coarse, shaggy coat and they are greyish in colour with black markings on their feet, ears and nose.

Habitat: Asian Palm Civets can be found in the temperate and tropical forests of south and south east Asia.

They are solitary, arboreal and nocturnal and they spend their days sleeping in a tree hollow.

Diet: Asian Palm Civets mainly feed on fruits, but they will also eat rodents, birds and insects.

Breeding: Asian Palm Civets give birth to litters of 2 - 5 youngsters.

Interesting Facts: Asian Palm Civets are also known as: Common Palm Civet, Toddy Cat, Motit, Marapatti, Uguduwa and Maranai. Motit Coffee is prepared from coffee beans harvested from the faeces of the Motit (Philippine Civet). In 2009 prices for this delicacy ranged from USD$300 in the Philippines to USD$1400 in the US, per pound clean weight.
